What Is Tae Kwon Do?

Tae Kwon Do is an art of self defense that originated in Korea. It is recognized as one of the oldest forms of martial arts in the world, dating back over two thousand years.

The name was selected for it appropriate description of the art: Tae (kicking with the foot), Kwon, (punching with the fist), Do (the path, or way. i.e. art of...) Thus, Tae Kwon Do translates to the art of kicking and punching.

Tae Kwon Do in the United States

The introduction of Tae Kwon Do in the United States began during the 1950's when a handful of pioneering master instructors travelled to the U.S. Over the next few decades, Tae Kwon Do grew in popularity, not only as a martial art, but as an international sport.

In 1973, Korea hosted the first Tae Kwon Do World Championships. In that same year, the World Tae Kwon Do Federation was established as the international governing body for the sport aspects of Tae Kwon Do. Tae Kwon Do holds the distinction of being the most popular martial art practiced in the world.

Tae Kwon Do became an accepted Olympic sport for medal competition at the 2000 Sydney, Australia Olympics.
