How is Taekwondo different from other martial arts?

All the different martial arts originated in different countries, thousands of years ago, as a form of military training. Karate comes from Japan. Kung Fu from China. Taekwondo is native to Korea. Taekwondo has become the most popular form of martial arts practiced in the world. Taekwondo emphasizes kicks more than other forms of martial arts, making it ideal for improving balance, flexibility, and endurance. Kicking is also a very powerful form of self defense for students of any size.

At what age can children start?

Throughout years of experience, we have found that children ages four and up will be able to achieve the greatest benefits from Taekwondo training. Starting at age four, your child is eligible to participate in a Little Tiger trial lesson, which will allow our instructors to work with them and evaluate their readiness for group classes. Our staff will then use their experience to recommend the best program for your child.

Will Taekwondo make my child more aggressive?

No, your child will be taught from the first lesson that a “Taekwondo Kid” never misuses their martial arts skills. Throughout their training, they will be reminded that being physically and mentally tough doesn’t allow one to be tough with others. Instead, Taekwondo students are expected to be humble, courteous, respectful, and careful about when and where they practice their skills. The instructors at Master K Kim’s Taekwondo will continually educate your child that Taekwondo is a form of exercise and self-improvement, and not a tool for bullying.

How safe is it to learn martial arts?

Taekwondo is safe and fun for students of all ages and physical abilities. Classes are supervised by expert instructors. All students are taught techniques in a step by step manner and at their own pace. A thorough stretching routine, matted flooring, and the use of protective safety equipment are all part of our commitment to ensuring student safety.

What if I’ve never done martial arts before or if I’m currently out of shape?

At Master K Kim’s Taekwondo, we have ongoing enrollment, so beginners are always welcome. Our special trial program makes it easy for new students of all fitness levels to get started. First time students receive a trial lesson designed to answer common questions and provide an introduction to basic martial arts techniques and customs. In addition, the belt system used in Taekwondo allows all students to train at their own pace and to improve their physical condition gradually. Whatever your current condition is, we are ready to help you to improve it.

Can students with special needs or physical challenges learn Taekwondo?

Our experienced instructors have worked with a wide range and spectrum of students over the past thirty years. In many cases, we have been able to successfully connect, communicate, and challenge students in a manner that matches their needs. Every situation is different, and we are always willing to meet with and evaluate any potential student to determine how Taekwondo could best be taught to them.
